I contribute to a sustainable digital world through my research and education on automating software engineering.
Hello there, my name is Michael Wahler. I am an experienced researcher, lecturer, team leader, and technology manager. Currently, I am a senior researcher and lecturer at ZHAW in Winterthur, Switzerland. This is my business card.
During my professional career I have managed global R&D projects and led international, globally distributed teams of scientists. I love building teams and supporting my team members to grow. I am a software and digitalization enthusiast with a PhD degree in computer science from ETH Zurich and an MSc degree in computer science from Technical University of Munich. My technical skills range from software architecture through real-time embedded systems to distributed systems, from model-driven development to object-oriented programming, and from research & development through strategy to people management. I have co-authored more than 30 scientific publications and more than a dozen patent applications.

What am I doing in the photo above?
I am presenting a slide on the positive and negative impacts of software engineering (lower half of the slide) and software products/services (upper half) on the different dimensions of sustainability. As an example, a sustainable software development process supports the participation of each individual stakeholder; if done wrong, the individual in the process can suffer from insufficient growth if there is not enough space for learning and training.

I root for lifelong learning. What I have learnt that day: 1) Don’t close your eyes when someone (in this case, Yana Yoncheva – thank you for the picture!) is taking a picture of you. 2) Don’t point to the only obvious mistake on the slide (extensibility and early optimization should be swapped).
